NorthernWarm YoYo Maker
In case you haven’t noticed, yo yo’s are experiencing a revival!
There are new yo yo maker
tools out to make yo yos easier to make, and I’m seeing tutorials everywhere on the web showing you how to make them. The best one that I’ve found is by Heather Bailey.
Yo yos were very popular in the 1930s and 40s when folks made quilts (more accurately coverlets) from them. The lovely scraps of 30s and 40s prints became colorful scrappy quilts. You find these quilts by themselves without backing and mounted onto a backing. Sometimes you’ll find them in a pillow.
Yo yos can be made from any kind of fabric that will lie flat when gathered. Used clothing in interesting prints, scraps from a clothing project or fabric squares bought for their colors are all used in making yo yos. Look for already made yo yos online on etsy and eBay.

Feedsack Fabrics are recycling at it’s very finest!
Farmers used cloth bags for grain, seed and feed ever since cloth was available. After the invention of the sewing machine in the mid 19th century, feedsacks became a commercially viable product, and began to be mass produced by the late 1800’s. At first, the users would bring back the emptied sack to their feed supplier to be refilled, but it was easier for the miller to prefill the sacks, so the empty sacks found other uses in the home as towels, linens or clothing. An enterprising manufacturer of cloth bags hit upon an interesting idea – maybe he could sell more sacks if they were decorated to be more desirable for the farmer’s wife. And the era of the printed feedsack began. No longer just beige muslin, with advertising for the feed company, sacks appeared in a wide variety of popular colors and prints. And paper labels were applied so that the fabric could be reused without the advertising. Through the great depression, and the war years, feedsack filled the needs of thousands of women for fabric to create the things they could not otherwise buy. At the end of the 1950’s, increasing costs led manufacturers to begin to use heavy paper and other materials for feeds, and the cloth bag fell out of use.

For You!
Last night I had fun shopping on Amazon.com. Not for me, for you. I created a focused shopping experience for lovers of vintage buttons, fabric and patterns. I hand selected reference books on collecting, books on how to craft with vintage materials, and you won’t believe this. I even found some listings of actual vintage fabric and vintage patterns. Who knew there would be listings of these items! And I topped it off with a selection of DVDs and VHS tapes on sewing. Bookmark this site for sure.
